Bio //
Hailing from Oxford in the UK, Nvmeral are a progressive post-hardcore band, taking influences from the likes of Alexisonfire and Thrice. The band was formed by childhood friends, Chris Jones and Dean Harris, and Ricky Taylor. Jones and Harris had met Taylor on the Oxfordshire gigging circuit, having supported the likes of Deaf Havana, Tesseract, Fightstar, He Is Legend and Exit Ten in previous bands. When the three got in a room together and started writing music, they found a common-ground in a progressive post-hardcore sound. The trio were soon joined by Tim Lucas and Varun Arthur to complete the line-up and a debut EP, The Harmer and the Fool, was released in October 2023.
Nvmeral's first release has been met with positive reception:
When reviewing Parry, Carl Fisher from ‘GBHBL’ wrote:
Take a moment to let this track sink in. The detail, the ideas, the imagination, and the talent in this band to produce something so impressive. Where progressive atmosphere meets post-hardcore intensity, the resulting explosion of noise is both heavy and melodic. A little eccentric, very electrifying and surprisingly addictive. A track that gets better and better, the more you listen and unpick the detail.
When reviewing SOL, Graham Finney at v13 also said that Nvmeral have potential beyond the local scene:
The driving blasts of raw post-hardcore are pinned together by the more melodic, progressive passages that sweep through their sound. By combining these two polar opposites, the new single “SOL” ends up being quite an attention-grabbing ride.
Nvmeral's EP also received high praise from ‘Metal Noise’:
It has a verve and swagger to it, the work of musicians are confident in their own abilities and don’t need to second guess. Blending raw and emotive vocals from both Taylor and Jones, “Far Enough Away” feels like the band put ripped a hole in the space time continuum and pulled through it a classic early 2000’s Emo meets Post-Hardcore tune. It’s so good that if it had been written then, Nvmeral would be playing Brixton Academy and touring the Globe on a regular basis.
The EP sees Taylor looking inwardly and exploring his mental health. Describing the writing process and progression of the band’s first two singles, Taylor says, “Parry was about the constant battle of wanting to be alone, away from everyone, but at the same time being lonely so wanting company and never being able to find the balance. It was about thinking of the worst possible option to find happiness." SOL came together around the same time but the track sees Taylor striking a hopeful tone: "It’s about being in the same dark place for years but over time, discovering ways of living with it the best way possible; forming coping mechanisms over time which in turn have changed my character.” On The Process of Burning, the band reflect on the overpowering impact of guilt, regret and fear, to the point where sometimes just breathing feels like a fight. Elsewhere on the EP, Far Enough Away sees Chris Jones examining the state of the world in 2023, struggling to change and wrestle back control as the landscape continually changes.
Having finished 2023 by gracing the stages of Oxfordshire venues such as the 02 Academy Oxford, The Wheatsheaf and The Jericho Tavern, Nvmeral are busy planning their next string of live shows. Never ones to take things slow, Nvmeral are also in the process of recording a string of new singles for 2024. If one thing is clear, Nvmeral are just getting started.
